Oscailt (Open)
Glucksman Ireland House presents a program of short Irish language films. The Oscailt scheme, which aims to encourage original talent in all areas of Irish language short film making, is funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board and TG4. This event has been facilitated by Reel Ireland, the Irish Film Institute and Culture Ireland. Irish language lecturers at NYU, Padraig Ó Cearúill and Hilary Mhic Suibhne will moderate the discussion.
All films have English subtitles.

Rolla Saor (2007) 25 minutes
Spreagann grianghraf a ghlacann Marc de Ruth de thaisme suim úrnua i ngrianghraif dá chéile a thógaint. Tagann cor nua sa ghnáthchairdeas atá eatartha, go dtí go nglaonn an poiticéar áitiúil; ní mór dó labhairt leo faoina gcuid pictiúr.
A chance photograph Marc takes of Ruth on the beach sparks off a new-found interest in photographing each other. Their mundane relationship takes a turn until the local pharmacist calls… he needs to see them regarding their photographs.

Ireland 1961 – Princess Grace of Monaco is making her first official visit to Ireland and little Marion is determined to meet her. Monaco 2005 – a woman makes her first visit to the Principality of Monaco.

Baineann James agus a athair Michael feidhm as an nGaeilge mar theanga rúnda dá ngnó spiaireachta. Ní féidir leo an rún a scéith le máthair James faoi cad tá arbun acu. Ach i gceann tamaill beidh an scéal go léir amuigh, agus ní bheidh ansaol mar an gcéanna riamh arís.
James and his dad Michael use Irish as a secret language to discuss their spy business. They mustn ever let James' mum know about their covert missions. But soon everything will be thrown into the open and life will never be the same again.

An gceapann tú riamh go bhfuil duine ag cúlchaint ort? Is gearr scannán greannmhar é Fíorghael faoi polaitíocht teangan in Éireann an lá atá inniu ann. Tá an scannán lonnaithe in oifig síceolaí, fad is a bhíonn sí ag labhairt i mBéarla le na hothair bíonn Medbh i gcónaí béasach, ach chomh luath agus a thosaíonn sí ag labhairt na Gaeilge bíonn sí á maslú le dúfhuath i ngan fhios dóibh!
Ever get the feeling someone is talking about you? Set in a psychiatrists' office, Fíorghael is a short comedy film about language politics in modern Ireland. When speaking English to the patients, Medbh is the model of friendly efficiency. But when she turns to Irish, she seems to unleash a torrent of Gaelic scorn against the three patients.

Fluent Dysphasia (2004) 16 minutes
Dúisíonn Murph lá amháin ag labhairt i nGaeilge, líofacht nach raibh aige riamh cheana - ní cuimhin leis go raibh labhairt an Bhéarla aige. Tá cúnamh de dhíth air!
When Murph wakes one day, mysteriously speaking perfect Irish – which he never could before - and having forgotten how to speak English, he looks for help wherever he can get it.

Clare sa Spéir (2001) 20 minutes

Taken for granted and stuck in a rut, Clare, a housewife, decides to take to the skies. But where does that leave the family she leaves below?
