Irish Arts Center PoetryFest 2009

Glucksman Ireland House is pleased to join with the Irish Arts Center, the Poetry Society of America, and Culture Ireland in presenting the Irish Arts Center’s inaugural showcase for emerging and established poets based in Ireland and the United States. Belinda McKeon, writer and critic, and Aengus Woods, philosopher and critic, curate PoetryFest 2009. The day-long celebration includes afternoon and evening poetry readings, book signings, and Meet the Poets, a special afternoon reception.
The distinguished poets featured are Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, (sponsored by Glucksman Ireland House with funding support from Culture Ireland), Paula Meehan, Joseph Woods, Enda Wyley, Harry Clifton, and Peter Sirr.

5:00pm - Meet the Poets: Don’t miss this chance to converse with and meet the poets involved in the entire festival, in a comfortable and informal setting at the IAC Gallery.

Featured Poets:
- Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin - Recipient of the Patrick Kavanagh Award and the Irish Times Poetry Now Award; author of seven collections of poetry including the recent Selected Poems (2009).
- Harry Clifton - Author of five collections of poetry, and recipient of the Patrick Kavanagh Award and the Irish Times Poetry Now Award.
- Paula Meehan - Recipient of the Marten Toonder Award for Literature and the Butler Literary Award for Poetry; author of six collections of poetry, including most recently Painting Rain (2009).
- Peter Sirr - Recipient of the Patrick Kavanagh Award; former director of the Irish Writers? Centre; former editor of Poetry Ireland Review; author of numerous volumes of poetry including Nonetheless (2004), and Selected Poems 1982-2004 (2004).
- Joseph Woods - Director of Poetry Ireland and recipient of the Patrick Kavanagh Award; author of two collections, Sailing to Hokkaido (2001) and Bearings (2005).
- Enda Wyley - Two-time winner of the British National Poetry Competition; author of four collections of poetry including the recent To Wake to This
- Belinda McKeon (Curator) - writes on the arts for The Irish Times and curates Ireland's biggest poetry festival, DLR Poetry Now. Her short play Fugue will be produced this September in New York by Origin Theatre Company as part of its 1st Irish festival, and she is currently under commission to the Abbey Theatre, Dublin.
- Aengus Woods (Curator) - co-editor of Other Edens, a collection of essays on the Irish modernist poet Brian Coffey,which will be published by Irish Academic Press later this year. He writes on philosophy and art for Publishers Weekly and other publications and is completing a doctorate in Philosophy at the New School for Social Research, New York.
