Non-Credit Classes

10-week evening, non-credit courses in Irish Language

Taught by Pádraig Ó Cearúill
H. Dip. Ed., M.A., Senior Irish Language Lecturer in NYU's Irish Studies Program at Glucksman Ireland House.

Non-credit evening classes in the Irish language are offered to members of the public at the elementary/beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels and are limited to ten students per section. The required text book for the class is Learning Irish by Mícheál Ó Siadhail, available at the NYU bookstore.

Pádraig is an exceptional teacher, and in 2002 was awarded the prestigious Golden Dozen Teaching Award by the Dean of the College of Arts and Science, Matthew Santirocco. He consistently receives outstanding evaluations from his undergraduate students, many of whom pursue the study of the language to intermediate and advanced levels.

In addition to his teaching, Pádraig is often in demand as a correspondent for RTE (Irish Television), Radio na Gaeltachta, and TG4 (the Irish language television station), and as a consultant on a variety of projects.  Pádraig is a native speaker from Gaoth Dobhair in Co. Donegal. Lying in the Gaeltacht valley which runs from the Atlantic inland to the Derryveagh and Errigal mountains in West Donegal, the area is extremely beautiful and is famous for its musicians, including Clannad, Altan, and Enya, and for the vitality of its Irish language community.

For the spring 2008 semester, Pádraig's Beginners' and Intermediate I classes will take place Tuesday evenings.  His Intermediate II and Advanced classes will take place on Monday evenings.  Classes begin January 28th and 29th, respectively.

To discuss class fees and to enroll, please contact Pádraig Ó Cearúill at po2@nyu.edu or 212-477-6177.
